Joan Sonnier
Joan Sonnier, MS
Pre-Licensed Registered Marriage and Family Therapy Intern
Joan believes in the importance of telling your story in a way that you are equipped to walk forward from the past as a whole person, with peace and connection in yourself, in your relationships, in your family, and in your community. To accomplish this, Joan creates a safe and healing place to work through life’s difficulties, drama, and transitions. Individuals and families will find a calm and conducive environment in which to share their troubles openly and honestly in their therapeutic work. She uses different modalities, focuses on developmental stages, looks at past programming in the family of origin, connects the past to the present to increase interpersonal awareness, and teaches communication and conflict management skills.
Joan works well with individuals and families that are navigating life changes, negotiating developmental issues, having parenting problems, surviving trauma, managing stress, and have symptoms such as worry, low mood, loss of sleep, racing thoughts, and feeling alone with nowhere to turn for help.
Joan received both her bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi in Child and Family Studies and Marriage and Family Therapy. She has extensive experience working in private practice, mental health facility settings, and community behavioral health with almost three decades of work in the mental health field. She has two adult sons who are both Army veterans and enjoys spending time with them, their wives, and her grandchildren. Joan spends her leisure time reading, walking, sitting in the shade on the beach, cooking, and quality time with friends.
There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you. - Maya Angelou
